Last week, in order to help hype the third season premiere of its UK import “Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” Showtime aired a special half hour interview between series star Billie Piper and Brooke Magnanti, who, under the pseudonym Belle de Jour, wrote the “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” book that would later be adapted for the show. It was the first on-air interview that Magnanti had ever done and the chat between the women, if anything, showed that the series has remained faithful to much of Magnanti’s experiences when she was a London call girl.

As the new season unfolds, Hannah (who uses the name Belle in her call girl endeavors) has written a tell-all book about her experiences as a call girl and, as a result of its overwhelming success, sees her life getting more, not less, complicated which bodes well for an entertaining third season. Billie Piper has admitted that she is looking for new projects which are completely different to Secret Diary Of A Call Girl.

The 27-year-old actress, who stars as Belle de Jour in the ITV2 series, told The Futon Critic that her next role has helped her to “mix things up”.

“I did a film called A Passionate Woman and that airs [in the UK] this year. It’s another true story about a young girl in the ’50s who is very poor who falls in love with her neighbour.

“It’s a very tragic tale about love but it’s also a true love story. It’s always nice to mix things up.”

Secret Diary continues Thursdays at 10pm on ITV2.

As opening shots to interviews go, you don’t happen upon much jollier than Billie Piper’s. “Shall we get champagne?” she suggests. Why ever not! Within 15 minutes she’s downed a flute, accidentally knocked it over with the sleeve of her voluminous Topshop sweater dress, emptied a half-pint of fizzy water and filled it up with 50-quid-a-pop sparkle.

She’s making up for lost time. During her pregnancy she counted down the minutes before she could indulge her casual, everyday vices once more. “I became completely neurotic and saw what I’d be like without booze and fags.” A pause. And then a chuckle. “And it ain’t pretty.”

She looks stunning. At 26 and the mother of one-year-old Winston, she has grown into her big, gobstopper facial features and has shed all of her baby-weight. “It was literally just about going mental for six weeks,” she says, of her post-Winston eating regime. “I think I was quite lucky. I wasn’t massively healthy. I just ate loads of protein. It’s either that or speed pills, and the thing is you do actually have to sleep at some point. You’ve got to try and maintain a healthy marriage and I’m not sure that amphetamines are that conducive to a successful relationship.” (more…)
