Billie Piper is back with a second season of the British series Secret Diary of a Call Girl (Sundays, 10:30 pm/ET, Showtime), in which Hannah — aka Belle, her working-girl alter ego — navigates a “real” relationship and encounters new women in her field. Piper, a former pop star, veteran of Jane Austen movies (Mansfield Park) and new mom, still treats her controversial role with wide-eyed curiosity. TVGuide.com spoke to her about her research into the world of prostitution, the overseas controversy surrounding the sexy show and which scene it was that made her feel “strange” to film.

TVGuide.com: What attracted you to this role?
Billie Piper: That it was so different from everything I’d ever done. And I think you have to keep trying new worlds, new experiences, and new characters. I’d done my fair share of sci-fi and period-drama girls. I was quite keen to play someone who was very different. And I loved the book; it made me laugh a lot. And I liked the idea of working with strictly female producers and writers; that was a big draw for me.

TVGuide.com: What surprised you the most in your research?
Piper: The “girlfriend experience”: A man pays an escort to hold his hand and eat pizza with him; it’s not necessarily just about sex. It’s often men who just want someone to be with them, but not give them any grief.

Billie Piper turned up for Carson Daly’s chat show in LA last week wearing a sexy black pencil skirt and sunshine-yellow T-shirt.

The 26-year-old Secret Diary Of A Call Girl star, who gained 2st 5lb while pregnant with son Winston, is now just 5lb off her pre-pregnancy weight of 9st.

How on earth has 5ft 5in Billie, who’s still breast feeding, managed it?

Our source reveals: ‘She’s often so tired or busy looking after Winston that she just forgets to eat and can make do on dinner and fruit all day.

‘But Billie’s eating really healthily and makes sure she only has healthy snacks if she gets hungry between meals.’

Banned from doing strenuous exercise following her emergency Caesarean, Billie also owes her toned figure to a comprehensive postnatal yoga and Pilates programme, which she does three times a week.

‘Billie does lots of gentle yoga and is starting to tone with reasonably heavy weights,’ says our source. ‘It’s really helped to reduce her stretchmarks. The ones she has are very faint.’

Other exercises include gentle stomach zip-ups – designed to knit stretched tummy muscles back together – leg raises and tummy toners.

To complement her fitness regime, Billie’s also been having regular lymphatic drainage massages to shift water retention.

Billie Piper thought she knew the definition of tired after putting in long hours filming on TV shows like Doctor Who and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

But after giving birth to her first son Winston in October, the actress admits she’s never been so exhausted in her life.

The 26-year-old admits she was quite naive about just how much hard work it is caring for a newborn.

Billie tells the new issue of Hello! magazine: ‘I had absolutely no idea how tiring being a mum was – or how hard mums have to work.

‘I have worked some sh**ty hours in my life, but these are the toughest I’ve ever had.’

Three months after becoming a mother, Billie admits she and husband Laurence Fox are still struggling to get little Winston into a sleeping routine.

She explained: ‘He’s a restless sleeper.

‘He gives us hope, then he changes his routine.’

Despite the exhaustion, Billie feels her life is complete after becoming a mother, citing having a child as ‘gaining a best friend for life’.

She said: ‘That feeling of unconditional love. I used to think it was so cheesy when people said that before, but it’s something I finally understand. The smiling… it’s amazing.’

While Billie is looking undeniably good so soon after her pregnancy, the former pop star admits she isn’t bothered about losing the baby weight just yet.

When the time comes to begin filming the third series of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Billie said she is ready to hit the treadmill.

She said: ‘I am going to start. The diet, the regime – it will start. It will be quite intense. It’s boring and hellish, I’m sure, but if you’ve got to bare your a**e on TV, you don’t want it to look bad.’

The Fox family have recently returned to Britain after a two week holiday in Florida over the Christmas and New Year period.

The trio stayed in the exclusive Shore Club in Miami, where they were spotted playing with their son under the shade of a beach parasol.

After their vacation, they popped over to Los Angeles for a few days so Billie could fulfill her promotional duties for the second series of Call Girl, which started in the U.S. this month.

Piper: We get to explore the Hannah side of her character. It’s slightly less about the work, more about her as a person and how her vocation and her personal life collide, mainly because she falls in love for the first time in ages. And for the first time ever, she starts to question whether she’s in the right profession, and whether she can carry on, because she’s fallen for someone that’s got no idea that she’s a high-end hooker. So, there’s more lies and deceit going on, and it’s interesting to watch two worlds in a head-on collision.

And then, her relationship with [her best friend and former boyfriend] Ben — actually something big happens in the second season with her and Ben, which is quite — twisted [laughs].

Well, that’s precisely what British star Billie Piper endured to bring you the second season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Showtime’s smart, sassy and, yes, sexy U.K. import, which premieres this Sunday.

So what’s happening this season with the Londoner? How about anything and everything a successful call girl doesn’t want! Think falling in love and—gasp!—could there be a baby on the way? I’ve got the scoop from star and self-proclaimed preggo-”bitch” Billie Piper herself…

OK, so thankfully, the pregnancy thing doesn’t happen on the show, but it did go down in real life to new mom and newly buxom Billie (Belle), who was five months pregnant when she started out shooting this second season of Diary.

“I had my moments, but it was mostly, surprisingly, all right,” she tells me. “I think everyone was generous with their time and their patience because I was a bitch at times and just furious to be working!”

The pregnancy did have at least one upside: “The boobs are like 10 times better this year!” Billie says with a big grin.

Aside from Billie’s new bundle of joy, Belle is in for some surprises too. “It’s not a new show, but it’s definitely moved on in terms of relationships. She falls in love this time—deeply in love—for the first time in ages. It’s any interesting comination: sex with someone you love and sex for money.”

I hope everyone was able to watch Billie on ‘Last Call’ last night. From what I saw, she looked fabulous and made quite an impression! Our Billie also attended the TCA Winter 2009 Panel and the CBS TCA Winter 2009 party last night in LA. I have added pictures from the event to the gallery. She looked, as usual, amazing and absolutely beautiful!

I will be adding more tonight. I am currently on the road to a relative’s house and will be away from my computer for most of today. That means no updates until late tonight or early tomorrow. I feel bad about this because of all the goodies that are coming out of the TCA Winter Press tour and her appearance on Last Call last night. Billie Piper, who has gone from playing Rose Tyler to turning tricks as Showtime’s Call Girl, has a message for Doctor Who fans: Relax.

Asked to weigh in on David Tennant’s successor as the BBC series’ Time Lord, Piper tells TVGuide.com she is a “big-time” fan of Matt Smith. “I love him.”

Addressing the concern that Smith, at 26, is too young to effectively play the good Doctor, Piper notes, “The fans get so concerned about these things, and they should just relax. It’s going to be fine. They’re in good hands.”

In fact, she argues that Smith’s scant years will serve him well in the role. “He’s a stirring actor, and he has the right energy,” she says. “That’s what the Doctor’s is about, essentially — having that energy that you just can’t understand.”

Piper pooh-poohs talk that a female — perhaps even herself — was being eyed to helm the TARDIS. “David [Tennant] has joked about me doing it, but … I don’t think the Doctor should be a woman,” she says. “It’s like going, ‘Let’s make James Bond a woman.’ It’s a man’s role.”

Being a big fan of Smith’s, might Piper be tempted to pay a return visit to Whoville? “I don’t know,” she hedges. “It’s hard. Sometimes you just want to leave something behind, and then you see an episode and are like, ‘God I really want to do it!’ You change your mind all the time.”

Billie Piper was on hand today at the Television Critics Association press tour to promote the second season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, which will make its American debut on Showtime this Sunday. Clips from Season 2 were shown, in which Piper’s call girl character Belle/Hannah meets a new love interest – one she becomes very close with, even as she continues to keep it secret from him what she does for a living. In the meantime, her professional life is threatened by Bambi, a young new prostitute who angers Belle by trying to take her clients from her. One memorable moment has Belle asked what her personal skills are, and she replies, “I can put a condom on without using my hands.”

Asked if fans have reacted to her differently since the show began, Piper replied with a smile, “Men don’t come anywhere near me anymore. They seem so threatened by me now. They just stare for ages, like I’m going to do something wild and raunchy. Much to their disappointment, that never happens.” She also added, “Lots of guys ask me sex based questions, so it’s an interesting place to be!”

Secret Diary is based on the blog and book by a real life British escort, and Piper said that when it came to taking the role, “I read the bits of the blog and then the book, and I thought it would be a lot of fun.” She said that her friends and family were “concerned about my mental state” when she took the role, “but they got over it quickly”

Piper and the show’s producer, Rebecca de Souza, both noted that Piper is quite famous in England, with a career going back to her childhood, which meant the reaction to her taking this racy role was fairly notable there. De Souza said that considering Piper’s “perception as a girl next door darling, to take this role was a really bold move.” Piper said that she did feel taking the role “Changed perceptions. That’s a good thing.”

For the third season, which will go into production soon, Piper will be elevated to an executive producer. De Souza said Piper was, “funny and smart. She sits in [with the writers] and comes up with ideas. That’s going to be great.” She added that she felt Piper being elevated to this position was a natural progression, noting that in the first year, they initially didn’t know Piper well, but by the second season, the writing was done with her personality in mind. As de Souza put it, there’d be times they’d think “Oh, Billie will really get this joke. Let’s do it this way.” Piper said that the show was such an interesting subject matter and she had so bonded with the role and the producers, that “it just seemed, personally, a nice, natural place to go.” She added, “I didn’t have to fight too well [to get the producer role], which was nice,” to which de Souza replied, “No, not at all! It would have been a pain in the neck if Billie were a pain in the neck.’

De Souza noted that they’ve consulted with many escorts to research Secret Diary. She said that included the real Belle, remarking, “A lot of people thought she didn’t exist. They thought she was a publishing scam just to sell the book. But she is indeed a real escort. We had meetings with her. She looks at the scripts and gives input.” However, she said there’s not too much access, because the real Belle, who has retired from prostitution, is very protective of her true identity.

For ongoing consultation, de Souza said, “We look online for prostitutes,” saying it was a bit of a challenge to find the right ones, since “more are not like Belle,” noting many have much darker reasons for being in that line of work – as opposed to Belle, who simply enjoys sex and chose this life. “We dad to find women who were like Belle, so I found English, educated, 300 quid an hour girls.”

Piper said these women were, “Very candid. They’ll take you to their flat and take you through their evening – ‘This is where we have drinks. This is where I offer what toys I have.’” Piper and de Souza said they even had one escort who “offered her services to the writers” for the night, in the name of research, but the writers were “too shy.”

The conversation turned to the nudity on the show, with Piper admitting, “If you’ve got to bare your ass on TV, you don’t want it to look bad.” De Souza recalled a meeting they had with the network when the show was first being developed, in which what could and couldn’t be shown was discussed, with de Souza saying the only real decree was, “All I need to say to you is, we can’t really see ‘the lady garden.’” Said Piper with a laugh, “Thank god!”

According to the Late Night Line Ups TV page and a very observant member of Billie Love, Billie will make a US press appearance this Thursday night, January 15th Wednesday night, January 14th, on Last Call with Carson Daly. I assume it’s to promote the second season premiere of Secret Diary of a Call Girl in the US. The show comes on at 1:35 AM Eastern/12:35 AM Central time (after Conan) on NBC. Check your local listings for channels and times, as the showing in your area may be aired at a different time.

It is still unknown if this is official since the main Last Call page has no updated schedule. When I receive more information about this, I’ll post it!

Update: According to the official Last Call site, Billie is scheduled to appear on Wednesday’s (January 14th) show.

Unknown actor Matt Smith has been named at the eleventh actor to play the Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’. At just 26, he is the youngest actor ever to play the legendary role.

Despite a largely negative reaction from Doctor Who fans, new chief writer Stephen Moffat said that Matt was, right from the second he walked into the audition, the right man for the job. “The way he said the lines, the way he looked, his hair. Everything was spot on,” he said, praising Matt’s dynamism and swagger.

Matt Smith has got a fascinating face. It’s long and bony, with a commanding jaw. He looks like someone who could have been in Duran Duran. He has a quality of the old man trapped in the young man’s body. Not to mention he has great hair.

Sophie Aldred, who played companion Ace opposite Sylvester McCoy’s Doctor, said: “I’m delighted. I’m so pleased that they haven’t chosen a big name but gone with someone who’s obviously a good actor but not well known to the public at large.

“He’s got a very interesting face and a fantastic presence. It’s going to be a difficult job to follow David Tennant, but I think he’ll be a safe pair of hands.”

Piers Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales, said: “With two hearts, a ferocious mind and over 900 years of experience behind him, it’s not every 26-year-old actor who can take on the role like the Doctor but within moments of meeting Matt he showed the skill and imagination needed to create a Doctor all of his own.”

Tennant, who announced he was leaving last year, said: “As I begin the end of my connection to all of this, I do feel a bit of jealousy of Matt who’s just about to start and has got all of this ahead of him, and it’s a very exciting journey to go on.”

Matt is recognisable to Billie fans as Jim Taylor, Sally’s cockney friend in “Ruby In The Smoke” and “Shadow In The North” and as Tim, the salesman, in the sixth episode of the first series of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl.

Warner Home Video have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Series 2 on 3rd March 2009. Based on the best-selling, real-life diaries of Belle de Jour, the second series of Secret Diary of a Call Girl looks deeper into the glamorous world of Belle (Billie Piper), with each episode giving us an intriguing insight into life as a call girl.

There are no announced extras.
